Council of Haida Nation update confirms continued call for essential travel only restrictions for Haida Gwaii

The Council of the Haida Nation has reiterated its declaration that Haida Gwaii remains closed to Non Residents and that leisure travel remains discouraged at this time.

Speaking on Saturday in a video address to the residents of Haida Gwaii, Gaagwiis (Jason Alsop) the President of the Haida Nation spoke to the travel concerns that many on the Island have.

"For Haida Gwaii at this time, we continue to remain Closed to non Residents and we are discouraging leisure travel and this is with the support of all of the Islands leaders at this time. I can say that we will not be looking to open up for sure at least within the next few weeks, three weeks and remind everybody that BC has still  not moved into Phase Three and that Haida Gwaii will continue to take a cautious and careful approach and observe what is happening in BC, in Canada and the World in preparing for our next steps"

Towards those next steps the CHN President also outlined what is ahead for Island residents.

"I know everybody is getting excited for the summer and we will have some more of the trails on Haida Gwaii opening for this long weekend and we continue to work to open up more of our protected areas so we can get outside enjoy Haida Gwaii and have a good time with our families"

Other themes explored was a call to remain united and to remain safe in this period of global pandemic. A wider update for residents of Haida Gwaii is to be delivered later this week.
