Council hears call for consistent parking enforcement from Councillor Cunningham

Parking along the shoulder  of Highway 16  near the Lester Centre last week
spurred on a number of complaints to Councillor Barry Cunningham

Parking around the Civic Centre and Lester Centre has once again become a talking point for City Council, that as Councillor Barry Cunningham made council members aware of some concerns he has received from the public.

Mr, Cunningham raised the issue on Monday evening relaying some feedback that he had received about what some believe is selective parking enforcement along McBride and adjoining streets near the two facilities.

"I've had quite a few complaints in the last week, even when we were out of town, about parking on the highway by the PAC there, right in front of the No Parking Signs and how  some people feel that there seems to be an inequality to the major events when it comes to enforcement of parking.

I don't know if this is true or not, I've just been hearing about it and no one can seem to come up with facts but I would just like to know if we do have some sort of policy about not enforcing parking regulations during major events, or if it's wish washy."

With the Mayor unable to answer his question, Corinne Bomben, the City's Financial Officer, who on Monday appeared to be the only staff member that was available to answer questions, reassured the councillor that there is no selective policy in place.

"We don't have a policy to Not enforce during certain events, or be selective about it. However, I will look into the parking on the Highway during any kind of event"

The quest for better parking enforcement may soon get a boost after the City hires on a second bylaw officer for the community, that addition to city staffing was approved as part of the recent passing of the City budget for this year.

The closing date for the second bylaw officer was May 10th>
