The Lax Kw'alaams Band Council is taking measures to protect their historical documents currently store in a the old community tribal office, with plans now in motion to move the collection to a secure office space in Prince Rupert.
The need for relocation comes as the current building has a number of structural issues and other concerns making the location not a suitable spot for the preservation of the documentation.
As part of the move the documents will be scanned, copied and digitized and transported to Prince Rupert under strict supervision.
The relocation to Prince Rupert is only a temporary measure, with the Band Council noting that they will return the collection back to the community once a secure location and been identified or built in the community.
The current location of the old tribal office is destined for the wrecking crews and will be demolished.
