Transition Prince Rupert is getting closer to an installation date for the much anticipated McKay Street Playground at the corner of McKay Street and Kootenay avenue |
Residents of the McKay Street/Kootenay Avenue area may soon see some progress on the much anticipated McKay Street playground project, with Transition Prince Rupert setting Sunday, March 4th for the Community Build Day for the first phase of the highly ambitious redevelopment plan for the abandoned baseball field on the west side of the city.
Transition Prince Rupert has posted an update to their plans to the organization's website, which outlined how installation plans will proceed, with the group looking for 30 volunteers to give of their time towards the project.
Those that wish to participate must be over 18 years of age for the actual work of building the playground, while activities are planned for those under 18 to give them an opportunity to share in the day.
Food and beverages will be provided for those that can offer up their time to help put the playground structure up at the park.
In addition to the 30 person labour force, Transition Prince Rupert will also be looking for volunteers to help with clean up and disposal following the build, as well as for the donation of a number of tools that are required for the installation of the equipment.
They will also be asking for volunteers to watch over the site for the first twelve hours following construction, to be watchful for any acts of vandalism as well as to allow for the concrete to set properly.
You can explore more of what the project requires from this information page from the Transition Prince Rupert website.

The March build date, comes almost one year after the organization had secured 100,000 dollars from the BCAA Play Here Program, that funding was directed towards the community proposal after the city's success in the Play Here competition.
Transition Prince Rupert received some additional funding this week, as CityWest provided a 10,000 dollar donation towards the McKay Street Project, the organization is also hosting a Go Fund Me page to try and raise additional money for the initiative.
The actual concept of the new park for the McKay Street area had its start over three years ago, moving forward with a Placemaking session hosted by Transition Prince Rupert that took place in the city in January of 2016.
