Council hears update on Safe Place program in Prince Rupert

An initiative from the Prince Rupert detachment of the RCMP has only been in place for a couple of weeks to this point, but so far the public reaction to the Safe Place program is positive with the number of businesses and organizations stepping up to participate continuing to grow.

Constable Kayla  Radford, a member from the Prince Rupert detachment outlined some of the background to the program, taking the council  members through the steps as to how a Safe Place business or facility is identified by a sticker that is placed in a prominent window of the establishment.

That highly visible sicker (see above) designates the location as somewhere that members of the LGBTQ can go in and call for assistance of the RCMP.

Constable Radford noted that the response has been strong in the community and that interest is high in the program, adding that the members of the detachment can offer up more information to anyone that asks.

Assisting the detachment in getting the program started in the community is Christine Danroth at Charles Hays Secondary School.

As for Questions from council on the project, Councillor Randhawa inquired as to how the word will be spread about the introduction of the program, while Councillor Cunningham  asked if Safe Place was a provincial initiative and what assistance the provincial headquarters may be providing to help get the project started.

He also suggested that the Safe Place program take advantage of the Community TV Channel hosted by CityWest.

On behalf of the City of Prince Rupert, Councillor Mirau offered up City Hall as a location for the Safe Place program, Councillor Thorkelson also suggested that information be shared with the City's Communications Officer, who would be able help get word of the program distributed.
