City staff looks to increase paving projects for year ahead

An expanded paving program may be on the horizon for the City of Prince Rupert
should the City follow through on an update from the CFO from Monday

Motorists around Prince Rupert may have heard some good news come out of Monday's City Council session as Corinne Bomben, the City's Financial Officer indicated that there is some thought being give to an increase in the amount to the paving budget for 2019.

Ms. Bomben noted that there has not been a change in the roads budget since 1998, with city staff looking towards upping the level of money to be allocated, though she did not indicate how much of an increase that the finance department has in mind, or the scope of the paving plans for the year ahead.

Councillor Blair Mirau made note of that item from the Capital spending list, observing with some surprise the amount of time that has passed since the city has given some thought to upping the level of money for paving projects in the city.

You can hear more of the Capital spending plans for 2019 starting at the 29 minute mark of the City's Video archive.

The City normally outlines its paving plans in the Spring, this year they took on six projects for pavement rehabilitation, putting the call for bids out for contractors in April.

Work on the roads got underway in the early summer, as paving crews tackled the 2018 to do list.
