Preparing for disasters the theme this week as the Provincial government observes Emergency Preparation week

Residents of the North Coast, Central Coast and Haida Gwaii can expect to see a flurry of social media messaging this week from their MLA, with Jennifer Rice in her role as Parliamentary Secretary for Emergency Preparedness, spreads word of the province's Emergency Preparedness Week.

The province has dedicated the period from May 6 to 12th to encourage people to be better prepared to protect themselves and their families during emergencies.

Prepared BC officials offered up two key elements towards the steps required to address any kind of emergency situation that we may face.

When disaster strikes, emergency workers may not reach everyone immediately, or even for several days. Families should be prepared to take care of themselves for a minimum of 72 hours.

During Emergency Preparedness Week, British Columbians are encouraged to take three simple steps to become better prepared to face a range of emergencies: Know the risks specific to your community. Develop a family emergency plan and practise it. Prepare emergency kits for your home and your vehicle.

The Province has also launched a new program called Partners in Preparedness, with Save On More and London Drugs both stepping up to help British Columbians when it comes to preparing their Emergency Survival Kits.

Included on the launch to that program is a video which highlights the program and the need for British Columbians to make a plan and lay in supplies to be prepared for when disaster may strike.

The province has a wide range of material available for your review on themes of preparedness in Brith Columbia, you can review the list here.

The province recently topped up Emergency preparedness funding to vulnerable communities with 33.5 million dollars, to help communities prepare and respond to disasters.

The focus on preparation comes as British Columbia enters the Spring flooding period and the summer Wild Fire season that could follow.
