North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice hails process for Legacy funding for Haida Gwaii, along with pending name change for constituency

The Province of British Columbia has concluded its work towards the transfer of funding from the Athlii Gwaii Legacy Trust to the Gwaii Trust Society will enable communities on Haida Gwaii to create opportunities on the Island.

The progress for the initiative, Bill 8, was hailed by North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice during the statements portion of the Thursday Legislature session. The MLA noting that the bill will now be up for debate in the Chamber  as part of the legislative process. 

Ms. Rice also noted in her comments that the Speaker will soon be introducing an MLA from this region by a new title, that of Member for  North Coast-Haida Gwaii.


Ms Rice followed up on her comments to the Legislature with some further background on the Haida Gwaii program.


As the MLA Noted, the Minister of Forests Bruce Ralston introduced  Bill 8 in the Thursday session, with debate towards it come through this session of the Legislature.

"I am pleased to introduce Bill 8, the Athlii Gwaii Legacy Trust Winding Up Act. This bill gives the trustees of the Athlii Gwaii Legacy Trust the power to wind up said trust by transferring the trust property to their corporate trustee, the Gwaii Trust Society. 

By permitting this transfer, the trust property can be used to fund a broader scope of initiatives on Haida Gwaii, including renewable energy, environmental restoration and economic development. Broadening the scope of eligible projects will support job creation on Haida Gwaii to the benefit of the nearly 5,000 residents of the archipelago.
