City to consider quest to seek NDIT funding for Aquatic Centre project

A grant opportunity for required work at the Earl Mah Aquatic Centre
will be the subject of a report to City Council tonight

Tonight's Prince Rupert City Council session will bring the city's new Director of Recreation and Community Services back to Council chambers, as David Geronazzo brings Council up to date on plans for renovations in the Earl Mah Aquatic Centre.

Among the notes he will highlight will be some background on the required replacement of a number of items at the Aquatic Centre, including the hot tub, replacement of the tot pool slide, regrouping of the tot pool stairway, replacement of the skylights and the repairs required for the mezzanine door.

The Recreation Department report notes that those projects require immediate attention to ensure energy efficiency and safe use in the facility.

The project parameters fall within the criteria for the Northern Development Initiative Trust and its criteria for their Community Halls and Recreation program grants.

If successful the city will be able to receive 15,000 dollars to put towards the Aquatic Centre projects.

The city also plans to make use other grant funds, operational funds and funds from the Gas Tax to put towards the Earl Mah projects.

Other funds required for the project have been allocated in the 2018 capital budget, the report for Council tonight does not include any breakdown of the total anticipated cost for the Aquatic Centre work.
