Jeannie Parnell to seek House of Commons seat for Green Party in October election

They left it close to the deadline for nominees, but last week the Green Party of Canada made Jeannie Parnell their candidate for Skeena-Bulkley Valley in the October 19th vote.

Ms. Parnell's biography was posted to the Green Party's website in recent days, highlighting her work in community development in British Columbia. Much of that experience comes from her time in the Vancouver area when she worked as a lifestyle counsellor with Vancouver Coastal Health and then with the Provincial Health Authority.

Now based back in Prince Rupert, the member of the Stellaten First Nation most recently was instrumental in the development of the Urban Smoke House that was built in this community.

The focus for her campaign will be on health advocacy, as well as social and economic issues such as poverty and education.

In addition to the Green Party website information, Ms. Parnell introduced herself to the party and the Northwest through her twitter feed.

She joins three other challengers in trying to topple the incumbent MP, Nathan Cullen from the New Democratic Party, though that task looks fairly daunting for all at this particular moment.

As we noted earlier this morning, an Ottawa based political site has provided a vote projection that would find Mr. Cullen claiming 61 per cent of the vote, before the announcement of Ms. Parnell's candidacy for the Green Party, they had been pegged to receive 5 per cent of the votes on October 19th.

It will be worth watching to see what impact she may have on those numbers now that the party has a local advocate for their positions ready to take the debate to Mr. Cullen and the other candidates.
