Mayor Brain hopes to share thoughts on Global Climate awareness with local students

Last week's Climate Strike caught the attention of the world, as a crowd primarily made up of youth assembled at locations in cities large and small to advocate for action on Climate change and their futures.

Locally, students from Prince Rupert Middle School and Charles Hays Secondary took to the front of City Hall at noon on Friday to bring home their message for a greater awareness of climate issues.

And while he was not available to meet them personally, Prince Rupert Mayor Lee Brain says he is looking forward to discussing climate issues at some point in the future.

The Mayor took to his Facebook page on Friday to hail the efforts by the students to raise awareness of climate issues, sending his regrets that as he was out of town he had missed their arrival at City Hall.

The Mayor has been travelling for much of the last week; first to the north in Alaska and now in Vancouver for the annual UBCM gathering.

But as he notes in his social media message, he will be receiving  a number of class visits this fall, with Mr. Brain set to share the city's role in climate leadership.

Those are themes that he may explore further at the UBCM sessions this week, with Mr. Brain a member of  the BC Municipal Climate Leadership Council, a look at some of their work from last year's meeting can be reviewed here.

As they prepare for their trip to City Hall and the Mayor's review of his environmental ambitions, the students and teachers can do a little pre visit research from the City Hall website and their notes on the 2020 Sustainable City Policy objectives.
