The framing is going up at the site of the Metlakatla Elders/Seniors Housing development on the city's east side |
For those that haven't taken a drive lately by the construction site of the Metlakatla Elders/Seniors Residences, the transformation of the once abandoned lot for the King Edward School into a active construction site is moving along quite nicely.
After a bit of a delay in launching the much anticipated addition to the region's housing stock for elders and seniors, the pace of work is impressive to see, with each week bringing the project closer and closer to the finish line.
Now that the foundation work has been taken care of and city services are in place, the framing on the first of the three structures has started, as work moves on to the next phase of the various elements that will make for the impressive looking structure between 7th and 8th Avenue East at Green Street.
The video below provides a bit of the scope for the project to this point.
The Metlakatla Elders/Seniors Village project was approved by Prince Rupert City Council in June of 2017, the project was first proposed to the community in June of 2016.
Based on the design of a Medicine Wheel, once the project is complete the site will host three separate buildings.
It is expected that it will provide for over forty housing units for Elders/Seniors in the community once it opens its doors sometime in 2019.
Funding for the project was provided by the British Columbia government as part of an agreement with the Metlakatla Governing Council.
