Provincial EMO Text Alert test set for November 28th
The British Columbia government will join other provinces next week in testing out the Emergency management system in BC, providing for a test of text message alerts which should appear on compatible mobile devices.
The test message will be delivered to mobile devices at 1:55PM on Wednesday, November 28th.
Ralph Goodale, the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness outlined the purpose of the testing set for next week.
“Canadians require timely and accessible information in emergencies so they can take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families. That’s why Alert Ready, the National Public Alerting System, is a priority for the Government of Canada and our provincial, territorial and industry partners.
The first test of the system was made earlier this year in May, which revealed a number of technical issues that have since been addressed.
Since April 2018, more than 100 emergency wireless alerts have been successfully issued across the country. These alerts have been credited with saving lives, as recently experienced with the Ottawa/Gatineau tornadoes on September 21st.
You can test your phone or mobile device from the Alert Ready site to see if your device is compatible with the system and what steps you need to take to make sure you receive the alert if your phone is compatible.
Some details on how the testing program will be rolled out across the country can be found from this advisory from Canada's Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness program.
