A new service for families that are facing the onset of dementia in their loved ones has been launched across the province, with the FirstLink Dementia Helpline designed to provide information and assistance to anyone who lives with dementia or is a care partner to someone who does.
The number 1-800-936-6033 puts the caller in touch with a full range of services that are offered by the Alzheimer Society of BC, which offers a number of support groups, community resources and education workshops for every stage of the journey of dementia.
Sandra Meehan is the Support Coordinator for the Alzheimer Society for the Northern Interior, Skeena and Peace regions observed as to how the service will provide for assistance.
"Someone might call in because they're starting to see changes in themeselves or someone close to theme and want to learn more about the warning signs and how to get a diagnosis ... Most callers are caregivers who need to know who to call or where to turn"
The FirstLink service guides callers towards the services that will help them to build the skills and confidence to live with dementia. Residents of the North Coast who are concerned about Dementia are encouraged to talk with their health care provider about whether a referral to FirstLink Dementia support would help them.
The introduction of the FirstLink phone line comes following a recent community workshop on Dementia held in Prince Rupert in September, hosted by the Alzheimer Society the Coast Mountain College sessions provided information to residents on the how to access more help.
It was one of a number of workshops held across the Northwest in the fall.
