Regional District to honour memory of former Director Nelson Kinney with committee room naming

The first of what may soon be a growing list of tributes for former Prince Rupert City Councillor Nelson Kinney was revealed over the weekend, with the North Coast Regional District announcing plans to honour the late Council member and NCRD Director by naming their committee room after him.

The plan was announced by Mayor Lee Brain through his Facebook portal, with the Mayor noting that it was Des Nobels who made the recommendation, one which was acted on quickly and unanimously.

Mr. Kinney passed away on March 23rd, the day after the March Regional District meeting which he had been in attendance at.

City Council paid tribute to his work in the community in two consecutive council sessions, with some thoughts being offered as to how the community may pay a lasting tribute to the long serving member of the City's Council.
Taking Mr. Kinney's seat at the Regional District table for the April meeting in Port Clements with Mayor Brain, was Councillor Barry Cunningham.

The City of Prince Rupert has not indicated to this point if Mr. Cunningham will be the permanent representative until the municipal election in October, or if the duties of attendance will be shared with the other members of the Council.
