The news from Kamloops of late May of the discovery of mass graves at the Residential School site in that community has resonated across Canada and in the Prince Rupert Area, School District 52 has outlined its condolences and noted of the actions already taken locally by staff members in support of those traumas reawakened from the news.
In an information release from Friday, the School District notes of the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and urges residents of the region to learn more of their work.
As well SD52 has reaffirmed their own commitment to the 94 Calls to Action from the Commission and call on the provincial and federal governments to no longer delay their response to those calls.
The Prince Rupert Board of Education also reaffirms their commitment to assist the Indigenous Education Council and Department as they continue their important work for truth and reconciliation.
The full statement from the District is available below:
You can learn more about the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission from this resource page at SD52 with some expanded material available from the Indigenous Education Department.
Earlier today, SD52 shared some photos of some of the classroom work of the last week that has helped to guide the students and families in the District through these times.
