With First phase not even open yet: Pembina announces plans for expansion of Watson Island LPG terminal

Some big news out of Watson Island kind of slipped through the holiday period un-observed, with Pembina Pipelines, which currently is moving along nicely with their Watson Island LPG terminal announcing it has already developed plans to expand the project with additional shipping capacity to come on line in 2023.

The update to the Pembina plans came as part of the resource company's 2020 Guidance and Business update of December 16th.

The first phase of the terminal which is to open for shipments sometime in the second half of 2020 will have export capacity of 25,000 bpd, the second phase will increase the total capacity for export to 40,000 bpd, the second phase is still subject to regulatory and environmental approvals.

The decision to move forward with the expansion comes following what Pembina called significant interest from customers and off takers who have watched the progress of the terminal with interest.

The added capacity through the expansion which is expected to cost $175 million dollars will extend the construction work on the terminal for over two years, as well as to bring an increase in anticipated rail movements to the facility through CN rails mainline into Alberta.

There was no indication from the update as to how many additional jobs, if any, will be generated by the expansion to the original plan for the Pembina facility at Watson Island.
