Kanata School is one of two long closed public schools that may soon be on the demolition list for SD51 |
Some notes out of the March School District meeting have offered up a hint that some of Prince Rupert's scholastic history may soon be destined for demolition.
A note as part of some capital Spending plans for the School District of last month offers up the fate ahead of the two long closed elementary schools with the District noting that approved spending plan for 2019-20 will include a Business case for the demolition of both east side schools, which were closed in a round of down sizing over a decade ago.
In their notes the School District observes that there will be assistance provided for the demolition of the two schools.
Other Capital Funding projects for the year ahead include:
A project development report for a Seismic project for Prince Rupert Middle School
Upgrades to the Library at Charles Hays Secondary
At the elementary school level, Lax Keen School will be receiving a Boiler replacement, while a DDC update is planned for the west side Pineridge School facility.
The seismic upgrade plans for PRMS would seem to indicate that any replacement plans for the aging school facility on Ninth Avenue west are still a ways off.
The call for replacement of PRMS made for one of the key discussion points of the 2017 Provincial election with then NDP opposition member and North Coast MLA Jennifer Rice making demands of the then Liberal government to take action on the need for replacement.
However as we've noted in the past on the blog since the change of government and the move of Ms. Rice from opposition to government, the topic of the PRMS replacement plans seem to have faded from the public view at both the School District and the Legislature.
