Vopak set to host two Open Houses on bulk liquids terminal proposal for Ridley Island

The invitations came with your flyers last weekend, the Vopak Open House cards tucked in with the shopping updates from grocery, hardware and furniture stores.

With the Dutch based industrial shipper hosing two opportunities to learn more about their marine export facility with Open Houses planned for Port Edward on Tuesday and Prince Rupert on Wednesday.

In preliminary background notes to the proposed development Vopak observes that in addition to contributing to the long-term economic stability in the region and increasing local employment opportunities, the terminal project would provide access for Canadian products to markets in Asia Pacific and diversify product and economic activity at the Port of Prince Rupert.

We outlined the Vopak proposal plans earlier this month, offering up a view of their Draft Environmental Review as well as some of the latest updates on the project.

The project will also be subject to an environmental review process, with the Federal and Provincial  Environmental offices seeking to coordinate their processes to facilitate and efficient environmental process.

Among those involved on the Federal and provincial side are the Prince Rupert Port Authority, Transport Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Environment and Climate Control Canada and the BC Environmental Office.

A public comment period is currently underway related to that process, with the deadline for contributions to that process set for October 9th

The approach towards the environmental assessment process has brought a range of environmental organizations together to express their concerns over the proposed development.

With Skeena Wild, T Buck Suzuki Society, Northwest Watch and Prince Rupert Environmental Society among those calling for submissions to the environmental process.
