The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is marking the calendar for four British Columbia communities for November and December as they seek further consultation on the Wild Salmon Policy. A document which was first released in 2005 and was designed to restore and maintain healthy and diverse salmon populations and their habitats.
Since that Policy was first put in place a number of significant changes have come along to impact on Wild Salmon stocks and from those changes comes the need to review and update the Implementation Plan.
As they tackle that initiative DFO is holding consultation sessions the first of which has already taken place held in Kamloops last week.
Three hours for the Prince Rupert Session have been set aside for November 30th at the Highliner Inn, with the North Coast opportunity for input taking place from 6:30 to 9 PM.
The two other sessions take place in Prince George on November 23rd and Nanaimo on December 5th.
DFO has provided some background information towards the upcoming sessions here, while a look at the Wild Salmon Policy documents can be reviewed here.
The T Buck Suzuki Environmental Foundation has also been spreading the word of the upcoming sessions through their website, featuring some background on the Wild Salmon Policy and the consultation plans of the month ahead. You can review those notes here.
Considering the range of issues related to the fishery, from fish stocks, to developments in the North Coast industry and the impact of any potential LNG development towards fishing issues, the Prince Rupert session could prove to provide for the most invigorating discussion of all four sessions planned by DFO this fall.
