AltaGas to provide Ridley Island Terminal update with twin Open Houses next week

North Coast residents can learn more about the proposed Ridley Island Propane Export Terminal project next week, with AltaGas set to host two Open Houses to outline the status of the project which recently entered its Environmental Assessment phase.

In the Executive Summary of documents related to the EA process, the scope of the project is outlined for the public, with the proposed Terminal facility expected to offload 50-60 rail cars per day of liquid propane.

When it comes to the shipment of the propane to export markets AltaGas projects that there will be approximately 20-30 vessel calls per year from vessels known as Very Large Gas Carriers calling on the facility.

As for the employment and spin off benefits for the region, the project is expected to generate 200 to 250 jobs during the construction phase, while there will be approximately 40 full time positions created once the facility is fully operational.

The two public consultation sessions take place as follows:

Tuesday, July 26
Port Edward
4:00 PM - 6:30 PM
Port Edward Community Centre
770 Pacific Avenue

Wednesday, July 27
Prince Rupert

The 315 page  Environmental Evaluation  along with its accompanying documentation was delivered on July 15th and can be reviewed here.

The documents prepared by SNC-Lavalin provide an overview of the range of research already conducted towards the proposed development, outlining the scope of the project, a review of the Construction, Operational and eventual Decommissioning stages of it.

Elements of the review feature a look at the process of receiving, storing and shipping the product of propane, with an overview provided of the Marine Jetty aspect of the delivery system.

Environmental observations, Consultation with local communities including First Nations in the region and a section dedicated towards the identification of potential accidents or malfunctions is also featured as part of the information flow provided by AltaGas.

The timeline of development for the project finds consultation, design and procurement taking up the majority of this year, with construction set to start in the first quarter of 2017 providing AltaGas delivers a positive Final Investment Decision.

It's anticipated that should the project move forward it could be in service and loading propane for export by 2018.

More background on the terminal project can be found here.
