Bursary opportunities will soon be available to students attending Northwest Community College, as Trans Canada Pipelines delivers on a commitment of money for educational pursuits.
The money will be provided by bursaries through the Trans Canada Pathway to Pipeline Readiness Skills Fund and the Work Force Training and Continuing Studies and Trades program.
Towards those initiatives Trans Canada is committing to 250,000 dollars in bursary funding
Northwest Community College President Ken Burt outlined the importance of the bursaries for northwest students in their pursuit of higher education.
“Bursaries are critical to providing many students who would not otherwise have the financial means, to access further training and studies,”
As well as the bursary opportunities, some of the funding will be directed towards a new graduated drivers licence training program, designed for students in remote Northwest communities. The focus
will be to deliver driver training to remove barriers to employment for those communities.
The program will include the purchase of a specialized vehicle to assist in the training, with the first course to be offered in Moricetown this spring. The donation makes it possible for the participants in the first cohort to participate tuition-free.
Access to driver training and the ability to acquire a driver's licence by residents of isolated communities, has been one of the key concerns mentioned in relation to Highway 16 Transportation issues across the Northwest.
"Through discussions with local residents, community leaders, and Aboriginal groups, we have learned that investment in skills development and long-term education legacy programs are important to northern British Columbians,” --Tony Palmer, TransCanada’s senior vice-president, stakeholder relations.
