The final School District 52 Board meeting for  2017 took place last week, as Board members explored a short Agenda of items on December 12th prior to the holiday break.

One of the key notes from their work on the night comes from their plans for an amended Capital Budget for 2017-18, where the Board agreed to add work on two reports for the Prince Rupert Middle School seismic mitigation project.

That  process will deliver two reports requested by the Ministry of Education, with a Seismic project Identification Report and Project Definition Report to be delivered to the Ministry by June 1, 2018.

The School District makes note in their review of the December 12th session that the submission of the reports does not mean that the project has been approved to proceed. And that the reports are to provide the Ministry with more information  as they consider the project and to potentially form the basis for a submission to Treasury Board requesting project approval.

The Board also heard of the progress for a new pilot project on Grade 6 Reports taking place at the Middle School.  PRMS Principal Michele Cross-Pomponio outlined how the new reporting format will focus on a student's progress in relation to learning outcomes of the new curriculum and in areas for student improvement, rather than the past practice of focusing on a grade.  The School will be awaiting feed back in the New Year from families on their thoughts when it comes to the new approach to grading students.

The School District Board also heard some background to a project at Conrad Elementary where students participated in a district wide event related to coding, with students highly  engaged in the the week long exercise called "Hour of Code"

The Board also offered up their enthusiasm for CHSS student Aaliyah Mahboubi who is heading to Taiwan for an International Science Competition, the board made note of her fundraising efforts currently underway through her GoFundMe page at https://www.gofundme.com/canadian-rep-intl-science-fair

The members of the Board of Education also set the schedule for their annual Budget Consultation process which will start in late January.

The first meeting will take place on January 31st at 7 PM in the multi-purpose room at Charles Hays Secondary School, the format as in past years will be that of a 'world cafe' style, where participants can share their thoughts in small groups.

The remainder of the schedule for the consultation process will see follow up meetings on February 22, March5 and April 10.
